Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring with me on retreat?

In additional to any personal items needed for a day retreat or overnight stay, we recommend bringing the following items to help make your retreat more comfortable: 

  • Items for personal reflection or prayer such as a journal, prayer book, Bible, reading material, rosary, or other spiritual items.
  • Refillable water bottle. Filtered water stations are available in multiple locations.
  • Travel mug for coffee or tea. The O’Keefe Lounge offers complimentary coffee and a selection of teas. Bring your own travel mug to keep drinks hot throughout the day. 
  • If you plan to listen to music or other audio resources, please bring a pair of headphones to not disturb other guests. 

Are reservations required to visit the Retreat Center grounds?  

To provide a place of quiet, Retreat Center property is available exclusively to those registered for a retreat.

How can I attend Mass while on retreat? 

For those who are interested, daily Mass is celebrated at noon, Monday – Friday in the Historic Mission Church. A morning daily mass is also available at 8am Monday – Saturday at Mission San Luis Rey Parish, east of the main Mission Church. 

Weekend Mass Schedule (All Masses take place at the Parish Serra Center, except where noted below): 

Saturday: 4pm & 6pm (Spanish Mass in Parish Chapel)

Sunday: 7am (Historic Mission Church), 8am, 10am, 12pm (Spanish), 5pm, 7pm (Spanish Mass in Historic Mission Church)

Are youth allowed at the Retreat Center?

At this time, our personal retreats, Quiet Days, and other programs for individuals are only open to adults.

Visitors of all ages are welcome to explore the public areas of Mission San Luis Rey, including our Museum, Gift Shop, Historic Mission Church, Cemetery, and Coffee Shop.  

Are pets allowed to come with me on retreat?

Pets, including emotional support animals, comfort animals and therapy dogs are not permitted in the private Retreat Center grounds, guest rooms, or meeting rooms. Service animals are permitted as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act. An animal is considered a service animal if it is required because of a disability, and the animal has been trained to perform a task associated with the disability.

Can I explore the Museum and Gift Shop while on retreat? 

Yes! While on retreat, receive complimentary admission to the Mission Museum and enjoy 10% off at the Museum Store. 

Is Wi-Fi available?

Yes. Wi-Fi is available throughout the Retreat Center including in guestrooms, meeting spaces, gardens, and the refreshment lounge. 

Do guestrooms have air conditioning and heating?

Each guestroom has a window, ceiling fan, and individual controls for heat; air conditioning is not provided.
