Brother James Lockman, ofm

A native Californian, born and raised in the Santa Monica area, Brother James Lockman has a lifelong interest in horticulture and the natural world. Before joining the friars in 1981, he earned degrees in Botany (BS, 1975) and Environmental Horticulture (MS, 1977) from UC Davis. He worked for several years as a landscape contractor and lay campus minister in the Davis area before entering the Franciscan formation program. He also spent time with friars in Guaymas, Mexico for a year and earned an MA degree in Theology at our Franciscan School of Theology in Berkeley. He was promoter of vocations to the order for six years during which time he served as an elected provincial counselor or definitor. It was during this term he became involved with the initial attempt to begin a master plan for Mission San Luis Rey and the development of a new friary.

He left the administration in 1994 to pursue a PhD in Ecology at Penn State and to work for a number of years in the Brazilian Amazon with Brazilian colleagues on issues of sustainability in forestry and agriculture for the eastern Amazon. Returning to the Province in 2003, he was employed at St. Francis Retreat Center in the area of environmental horticulture.

Brother Mark Schroeder, ofm

Brother Mark Schroeder was recently named Director of Mission San Luis Rey?s Retreat Center. For the past nine years he served as Co-Director of the "Justice, Brother Mark Schroeder, OFMPeace and Integrity of Creation Office" for the west coast province of the Franciscan Friars, while living at the Mission the last three years.

Born in San Jose, he has a background in Jesuit spirituality and "converted" to a simpler Franciscan approach to Life when becoming a friar 27 years ago. Mark has extensive experience as a Pastoral Associate at three Franciscan parishes and spent 12 years as Catholic Chaplain at the Sacramento County Juvenile Hall.

With a passion for the teachings of Jesus centered in Justice and non-violence, Mark also enjoys helping others experience the beauty of a creation-centered spirituality. Currently, he will remain the province representative to the Franciscan Friars' North American Council for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC), as he was elected to a third-term as Chair. He also sits on the OFM Franciscan International JPIC Council.

So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.
