Mission Art Now On View At The Tijuana Cu...
"The Arts of the Missions of Northern New Spain: 1600-1821" opens July 16, 2010 at the Tijuana Cultural Center.
Among the works on loan to the exhibition are a polychrome wooden sculpture of the “Immaculate Conception” and a vestment made of hand embroidered white silk satin used by Fr. Antonio Peyri. At 8' x 10', "The Last Judgment," one of the largest extant oil paintings on canvas produced for Franciscan missions in Alta California, has elicited significant scholarly interest and will be included in the last scheduled venue at The Oakland Museum of California in February, 2011. "The Arts of the Missions of Northern New Spain" a major international exhibition and catalogue was organized by the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso in Mexico City. Noted conservators from the Balboa Art Conservation Center in San Diego continue treating the painting in preparation for the northern California showing.
